- Ron Moore

A cowardly brute who battered his ex- girlfriend so severely she lost consciousness is facing a jail stretch.

Matthew Ryan, 26, was remanded in prison after he exploded in violence and attacked Ms Ashley McKee during the domestic abuse disturbance.

The shamefaced yob appeared from custody at Paisley Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms French at a property in French Street, Renfrew, on March 27, to her severe injury.

He rained punches on her head and body, punched and kicked her repeatedly, causing her to fall to the floor, where he pinned her down.

He then punched her on the head and body until she was left unconscious on the floor of the property.

The bully also started wrecking the house, by hurling items of furniture around the place as well as hitting her with a lamp.

The case called before Sheriff Frances McCartney and Ryan’s defence agent confirmed that he was admitting two charges involving the abuse of his former partner.

His lawyer said: “I can confirm he is pleading guilty to charges on the complaint.

“He has never served a custodial sentence before and I would expect that reports will be required by the court.

“He has been remanded in respect of this matter and has offered his plea at the first opportunity.

“There is no application for a change in his status.”

The accused bowed his head in the dock, where he confirmed he was taking responsibility for the attack.

Court papers reveal Ryan admitted a charge of assaulting his former partner by repeatedly punching her, causing her to fall to the floor, repeatedly kicking her on the body, repeatedly punching her on the body, pinning her to the floor, and repeatedly punching to the head rendering her unconscious - all to her severe injury.

The accused also pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm in that he acted in an aggressive manner and did shout, swear and damage items of furniture and ornaments as well as uttering threats of violence.

The papers also show he was admitted his guilt under Abusive Behaviour and Sexual Harm laws, which show the offence was aggravated by involving the abuse of his ex-partner.

Sheriff McCartney remanded the accused in jail while she called for a Criminal Justice Social Work Report.

He will discover his fate when he appears for sentencing on July 12.
