-

Former depute provost Alistair Nimmo has passed away aged 78.

The Scottish Nationalist has been hailed for his work helping families after his passing following a fight with illness.

Pals say his name is still spoken during doorstep campaigning as the best servant voted to the then Renfrew District council.

Bruce McFee was SNP leader between 1992 and 2003 and praised his friend for the contribution he made.

He said:“One of the highlights of Alistair’s political career must surely have been his election as depute provost.

“He made this role his own for four years until 1996.

“He added his distinctive style to the role and was well received wherever he went.

“Alistair was truly a great ambassador for Renfrew District.

“We were elected on the same night and it was an honour to work alongside him.

“Even last year, when I was knocking doors on the election trail, voters, of all political persuasions, were telling me he was the best councillor they ever had.

“He will be missed by many.

“But none more so than by his good lady, Anna, who was a source of strength and wise counsel during his years in elected politics.”

Alistair served Lochwinnoch and Howwood for more than 16 years.

He took a three-year break from politics in the mid 90s but was persuaded to return to represent the views of his constituents again.

Councillor Andy Doig serves as independent member for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood, and Lochwinnoch and paid tribute to a guiding light in local politics.

He said:“I was in Lochwinnoch at a site visit dealing with a local parking issue, when I was told that Alistair had passed away.

“Alistair was a great mentor and support to me.

“My thoughts are with Anna and the family.”

Alistair moved into local government after a career in the rag trade and worked his way up to general manger with textile giant Courtaulds.

He joined the ranks of the Cameron Highlanders during his national service years.

Alistair also worked with the most vulnerable in the social work sector and committed his time to helping young people anda the elderly.

He met his wife Anna while fighting a by-election seat in 1980.

Renfrewshire Council paid tribute to the campaigner for his long service to the community.

Provost Lorraine Cameron said:“On behalf of all at the council, we were saddened to hear of Alistair’s passing and would like to pass on our condolences to his family and friends.

“Alistair was a well-respected, passionate councillor who served the communities of Lochwinnoch and Howwood for more than 16 years.”
