Good riddance to bad rubbish
Volunteers show bags of support for Ferguslie Park clean-up event
Volunteers banded together to take out the trash blighting their community.
Ferguslie Park Housing Association led the clean- up in streets around the scheme.
Residents used litter pickers to bag rubbish left strewn in gardens and roads.
Lindsay Gemmill, operations manager for the housing association, revealed a huge haul was lifted.
She said: “Litter and fly-tipping problems can really affect the people living nearby.
“It almost seems an impossible task to tackle when you’re on your own.
“That’s why we roped in as many people as we could to come out and do what they could.
“We lifted bags upon bags of litter which were distracting away from the most beautiful gardens.”
Lindsay has vowed to make the walkabout a quarterly event.
She has called on neighbours to join forces to help make a difference.
Lindsay insists working together can help eliminate dumping on the streets of Ferguslie Park. She added: “It’s amazing what a change it can have.
“We want to see everybody come out to help, including the local councillors and businesses.
“Splitting into small teams means we can cover more ground.
“We’ll be looking to get the kids involved and we’ll have special themed clean-ups in Autumn and winter.”
Lindsay and her team have also been taking stock of what work needs done at homes across the area.
Renfrewshire Council urged to work on houses it own, carrying out building maintenance and clear-ups.
Lindsay insists Ferguslie Park can have the cleanest streets in Paisley.
She continued: “It’s all about fostering a wee bit of community spirit.
“We want people to feel proud of their area.
“The best way to do that is to get it tidied up.
“When families see the change it makes, they’ll be encouraged to help keep it that way.”
