Court hears of brute’s vicious attack on mother of his son

- Chris Taylor

A bully grabbed his ex by the throat in front of their terrified baby and told her: “You’re pathetic.”

Marcus Stevenson, 24, lashed out after waking Ana Caufield in the middle of the night

He trailed her into the kitchen and shoved her to the floor after blaming her for breaking his phone charger.

The brute admitted assaulting the woman during a hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Carol Cameron told how she asked him to sleep on the couch after he returned home after sneaking to the pub.

She said: “He went into her bedroom accusing her of damaging a mobile phone charger.

“He then took £50 that he had given for child maintenance saying he had to buy a new one.

“She asked for the money back saying she needed it to support their child.

“The argument continued into the kitchen.

“He grabbed her mobile phone from her hand. “She took it back. “He grabbed her by the neck and pushed her. “She fell to the floor. “Having seen her fall to the ground, the child started crying.

“The accused went over and picked up his son and returned to Ana Caufield while holding the little boy.

“He told her to get up while grabbing her by the arm, saying it was her fault the child was crying and she was pathetic. “She got up and told him to leave. “He refused to leave until he got money for a new phone charger.”

The pair had been in an 18-month relationship.

They split the year before the attack.

The victim let him visit her home in Erskine so he could see their son.

Stevenson turned nasty after he was confronted for staggering in from the pub at 3am on Saturday, March 10.

He was told to sleep in the living room after telling her she would “struggle” if he left.

But he got up three hours later and raged at Ms Caufield over claims she damaged the phone cable.

She was left “tearful” and “upset” and had bruising on her arm and a cut on her wrist after he cornered her.

The court was told he could be heard in the background as she frantically dialled 999.

The window fitter insisted he had been attacked, but there was no evidence of any injuries.

He admitted the relationship is now over.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew deferred sentence for six months and warned he will be dealt with sternly if there is any repeat.

He said: “I can’t have this behaviour.

“You’re going to have a relationship of sorts with this lady because you have a child together.

“As and when you have contact, you have to behave.

“You will not be admonished, but the severity of the penalty will be based on whether your good behaviour report is clear or not.”

Stevenson, of Drumchapel, Glasgow, has been ordered to return for sentencing in December.
