Old venues prove they’re hard to beat

-

One of the oldest live music venues in Paisley, The Old Swan Inn, is proving that sometimes the oldest is the best.

Not only do you get to listen to the bands for free, you get free pizza too. I swear it is the best pizza in town and a very generous thing to do.

Underwood Lane is in tonight from 8pm and tomorrow, in The Shoppers’ Slot ,The Dangerous Brothers will be playing from 4pm.

On Monday, The Spuds will be kicking off the fun at The Monday Club from 3pm, and, on Wednesday, Graeme Kerr will be playing from 6pm.

That’s four banging bands in a row over another weekend of live action at The Cave.

First up tonight are The Buchanan Street Preachers from 9pm. The group started off as a busking band on – you guessed it – Buchanan Street. They became popular playing in the street and also before and after gigs outside venues.

It’s not often they do a pub gig, so this is a good opportunity to hear them. They play a wide variety of music from punk to pop and rock to old classics, real crowd pleasers.

Tomorrow in the early slot, at 6pm,will be the very popular classic rock trio from Glasgow Sad Ida.

At 9pm, Moonshine Mojo – five experienced musicians who play classic, hard edge R&B, Blues and Rock – will be playing late into the night.

To round it all off, Status Two will be playing some head-banging blues rock belting out over 50 years worth of fantastic tunes from Status Quo from 6pm on Sunday.

The Tea Gardens has Moonshine Mojo in from 6pm on Sunday, so if you are having a quiet Saturday night and you can’t get to see them then this is your chance to catch them at their second Paisley gig over the weekend.

The Anchor Bar has Julie Steele playing from 4pm on Sunday.

She was in The Anchor last week with her band The Cassettes and they went down a storm.

This time she is performing as a solo act playing a wide range of covers.

Julie has a great rapport with her audience and creates a fun atmosphere at whatever venue she plays in.

Unfortunately, the All or Nothing Night at The Bungalow has been cancelled tomorrow, but that shouldn’t stop you popping in for some beer and catching up with friends.

Tomorrow is Sma’ Shot Day and, apart from the usual parade and stalls, vibrant street brass band Brass Aye will add a carnival flavour to the event.

Meanwhile, That Swing Sensation & Boogie Box Jive – Scotland’s award winning big swing band – will perform a mix of big band swing classics and rock n roll, while dancers from Boogie Box Jive will perform demonstrations.

The organisers tell me that the town centre will be transformed into a seaside escape, complete with sandy beach, ice cream, candyfloss for the kids and cocktails for the adults to enjoy.

Check out Shaun Moore and others for an afternoon of music, poetry and spoken word performances at the Dooslan Stane Stage.

It is a hugely important day for Paisley and it’s sure to be a great day.Open Mic Nights next week are: Tonight, with Stevie Johnstone at Hamishes’ Hoose from 8pm; Sunday at The Bungalow, with Cat Caldwell from 8pm; Monday, from 8pm at The Abbey Bar, hosted by Dunky Hunter; Andy Lindsey is at The Anchor on Tuesday from 8pm; on Wednesday, Johnny Barr is the host for Burger and Keg at 8pm.

Also on Wednesday, Andy Lindsay is at The Patter Bar from 8pm, while on Thursday, it is Manhattan’s, also at 8pm.

Support your local venues and keep music live.
