St Mirren chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick has hailed the legions of Buddies fans after a record number snapped up season tickets ahead of the club’s return to the Premiership.

Sales have now surpassed the 3,200 mark - the highest amount sold since the Saints moved to their Greenhill Road stadium back in 2009.

The previous record was set during the 2011/11 season when 2,972 supporters secured their own seats.

Hopes are high ahead of the new season as the club look to build upon last season’s Championship title win, which saw the Saints storm to the top of league and remain there for the majority of the campaign.

The excitement is building among the fans ahead of the big kick-off, with Saints taking on Dundee at home on the first game of the season.

The Buddies then head to Ibrox the following Saturday in what will be Steven Gerrard’s first home in the Rangers dugout, before a match-up against fellow top-flight new boys Livingston.

Fitzpatrick said: “It’s incredible backing from our supporters.

“The support from the fans over the last 18 months or so has been immense and has played a huge part in our success.

“Their dedication helps us support Alan Stubbs as best as we can as we make the step up to the Premiership and we can’t thank them enough for their continued loyalty.”

The Buddies return to the topflight with manager Stubbs at the helm after Jack Ross departed for Sunderland over the course of the summer.

Jim Kellermann, Cody Cooke, Josh Heaton, Jeff King are the Paisley outfit’s summer arrivals to date, with a number of new arrivals expected over the coming weeks as Stubbs looks to put his own stamp on the side.

Former QPR defender Cole Kpekawa is expected to turn out as a trialist for the side against Bolton Wanderers this weekend.
