Fun in the sun for summer club kids
Week-long camp at church is a hit with children
More than 200 children gathered for a week-long summer club at a church.
And the sun certainly shone on the young people at Bourock Church, in Barrhead, as they enjoyed Bible-based activities.
The children took part in songs, sketches, stories, challenges, a chill- out zone, puppet theatre, crafts, dance classes and games.
And is if that wasn’t enough they also tucked into juice, crisps and cooling ice lollies – just the treat for the sweltering weather.
The summer club was originally set up in 1996, following on from previous traditional clubs in Bourock, and has become a firm favourite with children in Barrhead.
No fewer than 26,000 children have so far attended the free-toattend group since it started.
Based around the Scripture Union programme, the aim is to show children that the church can be a fun place to go – a place where you can enjoy yourself, feel safe and welcomed through fun and fellowship.
During their two- hour visits each evening during the week, the children encountered stories from both the Old and New Testaments that illustrated what it means to work together.
This year’s club was called Teambuilders.
Through five Bible passages, the Teambuilders programme explored the nature of what it means to be a team.
As part of the activities, the children learned about Jesus and discovered what he did and how they can become part of “God’s team”.
Rev Pamela Gordon, Minister at Bourock Church, said: “The club benefits Barrhead in that lives are touched and changed as a result of what happens at Bourock Church year in, year out.
“To witness more than 200 children singing ‘We want to see Jesus lifted high’ is fantastic.
“The children share with us in song and conversation what Jesus means to them.
“The children wi t n e s s to us as much as we do to them.”
Bourock Church’s Kirk Session pay the costs of providing the free annual event themselves, alongside donations from a variety of sources such as congregation members, the Bourock Variety Club and parents.
St Andrew’s Church in Hamilton also runs a coffee morning every year to help raise extra funds.
