Summer show is a first for Paisley artists
Exhibition will be a feast of colour and talent
A colourful art show that has been brightening up Paisley for more than 100 years is set for a summer first.
Paisley Artists’s annual exhibition usually takes place in the run- up to Christmas, but this year it will open on August 11 to fit the show in before its Paisley Museum venue closes for four years for major refurbishment work.
Exhibition secretary Stan Milne said: “We are looking forward the show, which we are billing as a summer exhibition.
“There will be all sorts of subjects – landscapes, floral, still lifes, portraits.
“And there will be various media too – oils, pen and inks, etcetera.”
Paisley Artists was founded in 1907 but at that time it was more of a teaching organisation that held classes, rather than one made up of dedicated amateurs keen to display their talents.
The club maintains a membership of dozens of people and meets fortnightly between October and March each year for demonstrations, critic nights, work nights and slide presentations.
Although the precise origins of the club are not known, its continued success is put down to the skills and talents of the membership who consistently produce a high standard of work.
A large proportion of the club funds are gained though commission on the sale of paintings at the annual exhibition.
Current members come mainly from Paisley, with others hailing from outlying parts of Renfrewshire.
At the opening, it is expected that around 150 people will flock to the museum to see what is on offer from the club this year.
“The works are usually well received,” Mr Milne said.
“There is sometimes the odd mad painting, but then again it’s an art show.”
The Paisley Artists annual exhibition will run at Paisley Museum from Saturday, August 11, to Saturday, September 8.
Admission is free.
