Families back bid for pitch and putt course to reopen

-

Families have backed a drive to reopen a public pitch and putt.

Pro golfer Andy Carlton urged leisure bosses this week to reinstate the mini course at Brodie Park.

Hi s p l e a s hav e received support from sports fans, who insist a relaunch would benefit youngsters.

Jean Galbraith took to the Paisley Daily Express Facebook page to signal her support.

“It should never have closed in the first place. “My kids loved it. “Get it opened.” The former course has been empty since it closed more than a decade ago.

It is used by dog walkers and swathes of the land has become overgrown.

Andy will meet with Renfrewshire Leisure next week to discuss opportunities for the site.

Martin Colquhoun rallied behind calls on social media and even volunteered his services. He said: “Get it open. “I’ll even help cut the grass and pick up dog mess.”

Andy grew up on Falside Road, just yards from the pitch and putt.

He is Paisley Golf Club’s head PGA professional and has warned young people are losing out while the land lies derelict.

The athlete wants to see games reinstated at the park between April and October.

Gayle McGowan says families would benefit from a reopening.

She said: “I loved playing there when I was younger and I know my boys would love to also.”

The course requires updating and would need regular grass cutting and replacement of the holes.

But Andy says this p re s e nt s a n o t h e r opport u n i t i e s for children and volunteers to get involved.

Alan Gibson says a visit to the pitch and putt was something to look forward to when classes were out.

He said: “This was a must- do during the school summer holidays. “Get it open again.” Supporters say the reopening the course would bring the park back to life.

Irene Green insists all generations would benefit.

She said: “Even older people, not fit for a golf club, would love to hit the ball again, and take the grandchildren.”

Renfrewshire Council says it has no immediate plans to reopen the pitch and putt.

Bosses maintained they would hold talks with any group able to take it on.
