Meet Mhairi

-

Last week the UK Government imploded after Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit Chequers deal saw several UK government ministers handing in their resignations.

Among these ministers was the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and the Brexit Secretary David Davis. It took the government two years to get to this point in the negotiations and it took two days for her own ministers to bring it tumbling down.

Remember when the Conservatives asked you to vote for a strong and stable government?

Unfortunately, we have ended up with a weak and unstable government propped up the DUP.

I have warned previously that the Brexit being pursued by the Conservative Party will be detrimental to the living standards of many people.

Recently, the institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), revealed that post-Brexit price rises will impact incomes in Scotland and Northern Ireland more than anywhere else in the UK, with Brexit posing the biggest threat to living standards in Scotland.

Unfortunately, Labour as an opposition are nowhere to be seen and nobody can really tell what Labour’s position on Brexit actually is.

The infighting from both the Conservatives and Labour is harming any prospects that we have of making the best of this Brexit shambles.

The SNP have been clear that we do not want to leave the European Union. Scotland did not vote to leave the EU and neither did Renfrewshire.

The SNP believe that the best possible solution for Brexit is for the UK to stay in the single market and customs union.

The rhetoric we are getting from the UK government is that a no deal situation may be the outcome after nearly two years of negotiations – this is a disaster.

Scotland can have a better future than the one that Theresa May is leading us down. We must stick up for our country or the London-centric Tory and Labour parties will leave Scotland in a far worse position than we had post Brexit.

If they cannot even agree within themselves, then how will they agree what is best for the people of Scotland and Renfrewshire?
