Smith is ready for a goal fest

- St Mirren

St Mirren star Cammy Smith is looking forward to the opportunity to prove himself in the Scottish Premiership, writes Kyle Gunn.

The former Aberdeen youngster made only two starts during a frustrating season in the top flight in 2015/2016.

But the midfielder was a standout performer in last year’s Championship winning side, netting an impressive 13 goals.

Smith told Express Sport: “My experience of the top league with Aberdeen was limited to regular starts.

“But I managed to rack up appearances over the four or five years in the first team I was there.

“But I got to the age where the starts weren’t coming and I needed that.

“The move has been brilliant for me. We did what we wanted and got out of the Championship last season. Now we are in the Premiership. I’m buzzing for the new season to really go and try to kick on.

“Last season it felt like I had to add goals so I’m looking to do the same. We’re now playing at a higher level so it is going to be harder. But if I can aim for a similar amount of goals again then I will be happy.”

The 22-year-old was third behind only the departed pair of Lewis Morgan and Gavin Reilly in terms of goals and assists last term.

However, he insists the only extra pressure are the demands he places on himself.

“Obviously with those two moving on, I think it does take goals and assists out of the team,” Smith explained. “But the manager has taken in his own players and they will be looking to add goals and assists into the team.

“The boys who have come in need to add that and replace what we are missing.

“I also need to make sure I am consistent with that too and need to make sure I get a healthy return and help the team.

“I’m just really looking forward to it and we are under no illusions about how hard a league it is going to be.”
