Caring Eileen will brave the blaze for Accord

She’ll firewalk in aid of hospice

- Kenneth Speirs

21.07.2018 Paisley’s Accord Hospice is asking people to brave the heat and raise money by taking part in a firewalk.

And among those baring their soles will be Eileen Brown, a member of the housekeeping team at the charity, who is doing the firewalk in memory of her mum Jean Pickett.

Eileen, who has worked at the hospice for 18 months, admits that she was worried before she started working there.

She said: “I thought at first it would be all doom and gloom, but it is far from what I imagined.

“It is upbeat and there is a lot of laughter and cheer – I actually look forward to going to work.

“It’s a great place and I see firsthand how wonderful the hospice is with patients and their families.

“Staff help to make patients feel at ease and give their families peace of mind.”

Accord’s wok in Renfrewshire is well known and highly respected.

It gives free specialist palliative medical and nursing care and support to people whose illness is causing physical pain and emotional distress and for whom curative treatment may no longer be appropriate.

Accord cares for around 1,200 patients each year and needs to raise around £ 1.8 million annually.

Senior fundraiser David McFadden said there are already more than 30 people signed up to do the firewalk which takes place in the hospice grounds at Morton Avenue, just off Hawkhead Road, on Saturday, September 29.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see so many people already signed up for our first-ever firewalk.

“With the help and support of the community, the individuals we look after are given the first class care they deserve.

“Do it for Accord and sign up to the firewalk.”

You can register online at www. accordhospice. org. uk/ event/ accord-firewalk or by calling the fundraising team on 0141 581 2000.

Registration costs £ 20 and participants are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of £100.
