Penalty shoot-out seals the deal for Farmer’s Boys

Alan Frizzell was the hat-trick hero as Neilston bested Premier Division Champions Beith to claim The Hugh Blair Trophy.

The Farmer’s Boys went on to win on penalties after a memorable 4-4 draw, with Frizzell the man of the moment.

They claimed the annual competitio­n with a 3-2 win on spot kicks and the celebratio­ns continued long into the night.

Neilston co-manager Martin Campbell said: “It’s a really good win over Beith, who are the best of the best really.

“It’s a friendly tie, but it has an edge and is always a good occasion. Obviously Beith are a top, top team so we are pleased to have come out on top in the end.

“Their last minute goal put a dampener on things but we were able to go on and win on penalties, which was excellent.”

Campbell also praised Frizzell who bagged a classy hattrick after a campaign to be deployed further up the pitch.

“He has been on at us to play up front and he showed what he can do with three really good finishes,“he added.

The topsy-turvy encounter saw ‘ Ton take the lead through makeshift centre midfielder Kieran McDade as he slotted home a Patterson cutback.

Beith levelled things up before Frizzell took matters into his own hands helping Neilston run into a 4-2 lead with three top class finishes.

With 15 minutes to play, Beith reduced the deficit before evening things up through a wonder goal with just seconds on the clock.

The Brig O’Lea men held their nerve to take win 3-2 on penalties.

They will now prepare to take on Hurlford United on Wednesday night before taking on Johnstone Burgh in the Sectional League Cup on Saturday.
