It’s time to salute our inspirational women

Charity wants your vote ahead of town hall event

- Alison Rennie

27.07.2018 In the year celebrating 100 years since women first got the vote, a charity wants to highlight 100 inspiring women from across Renfrewshire.

Active Communities has organised the 100 Voices of Inspiring Women event in Johnstone Town Hall.

And it’s asking for members of the public to submit nominations for which women in Renfrewshire – either from history or the present day – inspire them.

Susan McDonald, manager of Active Communities, said: “We want to celebrate women in the community of Renfrewshire.

“We thought it would be good this year as it’s the 100th anniversary of the first women getting the vote.

“On the day we plan to have photos of the women up around the hall with a quote alongside it.

“I think we could easily have more than 100 women. Of course we won’t knock anyone back.”

The event on Friday, September 14, will bring women together to celebrate the centenary of the vote through fun activities, performances, a healthy lunch and inspiring speakers.

Mhairi Black MP will be the keynote speaker while Provost Lorraine Cameron will open the event.

There will also be speeches from Jean Cameron, who led Paisley’s bid to become City of Culture 2021; Corinne Hutton, an inspirational mum- of- one from Lochwinnoch who set up the charity Finding Your Feet after her hands and legs below the knee were amputated after she suffered sepsis in 2013; and Brogan Kennedy, a secondary school pupil who’s part of the Hearty Lives programme run by Active Communities.

There will also be fun performances and a healthy lunch at the event.

Nominate your inspiring woman from Renfrewshire by going to activecommunities. co.uk for an online nomination form. Use it to explain why, in 100 words or less, you’re nominating the person you are and include a photo which can be put up on the wall at the event.

Ema i l it to c h e r yl@ activecommunities. co. uk or hand it in at 16 Quarry Street, Johnstone.

The event on September 14, runs from noon till 3pm.

Spaces at the event are limited and allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Register for a free ticket at eventbrite.com and search for 100 Voices of Inspiring Women.
