May, 95, is such a good sport
Pensioner enjoys her big day out at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome
A sport mad great gran completed a hat-trick of big events with a trip to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – at the age of 95.
Intrepid buddie May Bone took in the cycling at the European Championships this week after watching the Olympic football at Hampden and the Commonwealth Games hockey in recent years.
There is no stopping sport daft May, who loved every minute of her trip to the cycling this week.
She said: “I had watched the cycling on the TV before but being there, it was a great atmosphere. I enjoyed it very much, it was wonderful. “Everyone was very kind to me.” Football fan May – who has one stepson, three step-grandchildren and a whopping nine step-greatgrandchildren – previously lived in England but returned to her native Renfrewshire after being widowed.
She has always been keen on sport since her father took her to St Mirren games as a girl in the 30s.
“I had a boy’s season ticket then as there were no girls season ticket. It was in the days you would either be lifted over the turnstile or squeezed through. I used to go with my dad,” she added.
“I have always liked sport, cricket, football – not boxing though.”
Her nephew Kenneth Blackman has accompanied her to several big events, including when she joined the crowds at Hampden Park for an Olympic Games’ football match between Egypt and Belarus in 2012.
She also attended the hockey at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, taking in a match between India and Scotland.
Kenneth said: “She loves sport, she watches all the sport channels on TV. She loves cricket, rugby and football. It’s great that she is still able to get out to these big events even at her age.
“She really enjoyed the cycling and all the staff and volunteers at the velodrome were so helpful and kind to us. We had a whole day there watching the racing.”
Reflecting on her recent trips to major sporting events she said: “I feel very fortunate, I’m very lucky to still be able to get out.”
