Get into the Sister Act

Drama group in Fringe debut

- Kenneth Speirs

Alice in Wonderland is just one of the shows Stage Avenue has produced Book now for a top Broadway show that’s being staged by a group of talented performers at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Stage Avenue Performing Arts, of Elderslie, is putting on the hugely popular Sister Act in the stage musical version of the hit 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Packed with fantastic songs such as Raise Your Voice, Take Me To Heaven and Spread The Love Around, Sister Act follows the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who, after witnessing a murder, is put under police protection in a convent.

Following on from the huge success of performing the same show last year in St Paul’s Church, in Johnstone, Stage Avenue troupers are delighted to be reprising their roles at this year’s festival.

Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing nuns and a moving story, Sister Act is sure to get audiences up and dancing in the aisles.

Established in 2013, by local graduate Fiona McGregor, and based in Elderslie Scout Hall, Stage Avenue Performing Arts has steadily expanded from classes for those from three years old to adding in a senior section in 2017, and has gone on to create a reputation with people of all ages.

Fiona said: “For the first time since being formed, the senior section of Stage Avenue Performing Arts are making their Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut with a show aimed at those with a love of musicals.”

The school’s youth section classes are suitable for children from age three, with classes running on Monday evenings.

Fiona added: “Classes incorporate some acting, dancing and singing along with our main aims of developing children’s confidence and having hours of fun.

“We also run our ever popular fiveday musical theatre summer school every July with more plans very much up our sleeve. No experience is necessary to join. Enrolment night is Monday, August 27.”

Sister Act is being performed at ‘theSpace@Niddry Street’, Edinburgh, from August 13 to 18, at 7.25pm.

Tickets are £15 on 0131 510 2384, or at boxoffice. niddry@ thespace uk.com
