Swimmers meet idols

...And the First Minister too

- Craig Ritchie

REN96 have taken a break from the poolside to catch a glimpse of the starts at the European Championships in Glasgow.

The club’s swimmers have taken time out to support the European Championships as kit carriers for the athletes.

Mitzi Walker, Lauren Paterson, Taylor Walker, Jack Bell, Clare Wallace, Cait Gallanagh, Maisie Macgregor, Joanne Poultney, Erin Doyle, Maddie MacKinnon, Grace Mulhern and Ruiri Campbell have all been working hard to ensure that the swimmers’ belongings are returned back to them at the end of each event.

This can be quite challenging especially during the 50 metre events when the swimmers swim the length of the pool faster than the volunteers can walk it. There has been rigorous preparation and the events have been very demanding but this has been a small price to pay for the young volunteers who get the chance to meet their swimming idols.

Mitzi Walker told Express Sport: “Its been an amazing experience for our teenagers and it has been great to rub shoulders with some of the fastest swimmers in Europe.”

There was an extra surprise for the club’s volunteers when First Minister Nicola Sturgeon popped into say hello.

Ms Sturgeon spent some time talking to the volunteers and showed that she was a great sport when cheeky Jack Bell and Mitzi asked for a group selfie.

But all good things come to an end. The club elite swimmers will be back in the pool next week preparing for the up and coming Scottish National Age Groups.
