Samson’s confident of an Ibrox upset

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren goalkeeper Craig Samson insists Saints believe they are good enough to upset Rangers this Sunday.

The Buddies head to Ibrox in what will be Gers boss Steven Gerrard’s first home league game in charge and fans of both clubs have been snapping up tickets with a nearcapacity crowd expected.

Samson admits the clash will be an altogether new experience for a number of the St Mirren side. However, the 34-year-old says they can take confidence from the way that they started the season against Dundee last weekend.

And the stopper claims the Buddies have nothing to fear having already proven they won’t be pushovers this season.

Samson said: “You have got to try and take confidence from Saturday’s game but obviously it is a completely different game on Saturday.

“A lot of the boys in our squad have probably never been to or played at Ibrox before.

“We have got to go there in a positive frame of mind and try to get a result.

“We know that we are good enough. We had a bit of a sticky spell during the Betfred Cup and against Sunderland but the manager has ironed things out and we broke it all down.

“We had a good win last week and I think we showed a resilience when the chips were down against Dundee and showed we can compete with teams in this league.

“I think all the boys in the team have to use there experience and help the boys out who haven’t been there before.

“But we are up in this league because we wanted to go to Ibrox, Parkhead and Pittodrie. They are the games that we want to play in.”

The experienced shot-stopper looks set to be between the sticks once again following an impressive performance against Dundee last Saturday.

Samson’s penalty save from Sofien Moussa with the scores locked at 1-1 proved to be decisive as Danny Mullen struck a late winner to seal all three points.

And he says he hopes to prove to boss Alan Stubbs that he is deserving of the number one spot – despite the arrival of Danny Rogers in the summer.

He said: “I spoke to the manager when he first came in the door and he told me he was going to bring a keeper in.

“All that I asked for from the manager was for him to let me show what I can do.”
