Samson makes the grade in first week

- St Mirren

Craig Samson has started the season with a bang after being named in the SPFL team of the week.

The St Mirren goalkeeper provided the heroics as the Buddies clinched an opening day 2-1 victory over Dundee at the Simple Digital Arena.

Samson had to be at his best as he made countless blocks from the lively Jean Mendy and Sofien Moussa.

But it was his penalty save from the latter that turned the tie in favour of the hosts, with Danny Mullen hitting the winner late on to seal all three points.

An SPFL spokesman said:“The Buddies won their first game back in the top flight thanks, in large part, to the heroics of their goalkeeper.

“In addition to making a couple of fine stops in open play, Samson also repelled Sofien Moussa’s penalty with the game finely in the balance at 1-1.”

Team of the week: Craig Samson (St Mirren), Ryan Porteous (Hibernian), Nikola Katic (Rangers), Coll Donaldson (Inverness CT), Bobby Linn (Arbroath), James Vincent (Dunfermline), Tom Rogic (Celtic), Peter Haring (Hearts), Greg Taylor (Kilmarnock), Lawrence Shankland (Ayr), Blair Henderson (Edinburgh City).
