Thug is caged for refusing to carry out unpaid work

Brute had already been convicted of assault

- Ron Moore

A violent yob who terrified women was caged for 12 months yesterday for repeatedly refusing to carry out unpaid work.

Defiant Jordan McLellan, 26, had been convicted of assault to injury and permanent disfigurement after a brutal attack on Ms Lisa Marie Gray.

McLellan also notched up a separate offence when he terrorised his partner Antoinette Kirkland when he went home blazing drunk and hurled objects around a property in Renfrew.

Yesterday McLellan appeared for sentencing at Paisley Sheriff Court after admitting breaching Community Payback Orders comprising hours of unpaid work handed him as punishment for the offences.

Defence agent Michael McKeown told the court: “Sentence had been deferred for a Crimninal Justice Social Work Report.

“My client has pre- existing problems resulting from his drug abuse. He appears to be incapable of completing the Community Payback Orders to date.

“His last offence dates from October 2016. The previous one was from July 2015. On each occasion he has completed some of the hours but he has not finished the orders.”

The lawyer also read out a letter written by his partner Ms Kirkland, who appealed to the court to spare her partner a jail stretch.

He added: “They have six children living in the house between them and she fears the negative impact that custody would have on the family.”

McLellan attacked Ms Gray on July 24, 2015, at Dunvegan Quadrant in Renfrew where he grabbed her by the body, dragged her through a close, and punched her on the head to her injury and permanent disfigurement.

He also terrorised Ms Kirkland, even hurling an iron out of the window, during a booze-fuelled rampage at a property in Mitchell Avenue, Renfrew, on October 23, 2016.

He also has a previous assault charge against his partner dating from in September 2014 when he flew into a rage and pushed Ms Kirkland, causing her to fall to the ground.

The court heard that the social work department have “concerns” about that relationship and were against placing him on an electronic tag after carrying out a restriction of liberty assessment.

Yesterday Sheriff Ireland said the court had finally run out of patience with McLellan.

He said: “On each of these occasions these orders have been breached. The court can have no further confidence that any Community Payback Order would serve justice.

“In my view no disposal is appropriate other than custody given the gravity of the offences, your record and your breaching Community Payback Orders.

“Your conviction for assault to injury and permanent disfigurement on a woman is a matter of great concern.”

He jailed McLellan for 12 months.
