Ladies hold their nerve to seal win

Home International success for Scotland

- Craig Ritchie

Lochwinnoch golfer Eilidh Briggs starred as Scotland drove into the distance with the Ladies Home International.

In a thrilling final day of action, it was Scotland who held their nerve to beat Ireland 6-3 to win the competition for the first time since 2010.

Having played a key role throughout the course of the week, Briggs, who plays her golf at Kilmacolm GC, teamed up with Connie Jaffrey to half their pairs tie against Irish counterparts Jessica Ross and Shannon Burke.

The success went all the way down to the final match between Scottish Amateur champion Gemma Batty and Curtis Cup team member Paula Grant. Batty, who had lost her singles matches against both Wales and England, needed only a half to secure victory on a countback.

But, despite being one up with three holes left to play, Batty was under pressure when Grant birdied the 16th to make the match-up all square.

However, the Scot managed to hold on to make par on the final two holes to ensure that Scotland secured the win.

Scotland had got off to a solid start by winning the morning foursomes 2.5-0.5, where Briggs teamed up with Jaffrey.

Hannah McCook then continued her great form with a 6&5 win in the singles.

Chloe Goadby and Jaffrey were the other Scottish singles winners, while Mairead Martin and Annabel Wilson claimed points for the Irish side.

Susan Wood, non- playing captain, Scotland: “I am absolutely thrilled for the team. Ireland were strong favourites on paper but I had a great team with a lot of experience.

“Gemma is Scottish Champion and I wanted to put her at number six. It had been tough to leave her out of the foursomes, but I knew she could do it.”

Briggs made her presence felt in the day two clash against Wales as she went unbeaten. Another half in the foursomes was followed up with Scotland’s biggest win of the weekend as she triumphed 6&4 against Bethany Morris.
