Report finds Paisley is still plagued by poverty
Paisley continues to be blighted by one of the highest levels of poverty in Scotland, a new report reveals.
More than 15 per cent of Renfrewshire’s population live in a “most deprived” area of the country.
The data released by the Small Area Population Estimates survey shows a staggering 27,000 people in the Paisley council area are struggling through in the worst living conditions – according to Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation figures.
The index compare s deprivation across almost 7,000 areas in Scotland over standards such as health, crime, income and employment.
Renfrewshire places as one of the poverty hotspots with 15.2 per cent of the council area’s 177,000 population existing in the worst level of deprivation.
Paisley’s Ferguslie Park area was formally designated the most deprived area in the country according to SIMD research.
However, the new data reveals Glasgow, Dundee, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire and Inverclyde are deemed to have more people living in poverty.
While West Dunbartonshire with 15.3 per cent of its people almost ties in seventh place with Renfrewshire in terms of the deprivation ladder.
Renfrewshire also has more struggling families compared the national average, where only 9.7 per cent of people across Scotland live in an area blighted by the worst poverty.
While neighbouring East Renfrewshire, in contrast to Paisley, is blessed with the least number of families affected by poverty, according the SAPE data.
East Ren has the highest number of people, equivalent to 32.7 per cent of its 95,000 population, living in area blighted by the least poverty, according to the report.
Population projections of the 59 Westminister voting constituencies in the country show that Paisley and Renfrewshire North, held by Gavin Newlands MP, has since a population increase of almost two per cent between 2011 and 2017.
While over the same period, Paisley and Renfrewshire South, held by Mhairi Black MP, has seen its population dip by more than one per cent.
Of 59 Scots constituencies, 25 per cent have also witnessed a decrease in population between 2011 and 2017.
