Muldoons back in town after 20 years

Fans delighted as popular band makes comeback

- Kirsty McKenzie

One of Paisley’s most memorable bands are back with new music – after keeping fans waiting for more than 20 years.

The Muldoons, a popular name on the local live circuit in the early 90s, first dusted off their guitars for a special one-off reunion gig at The Bungalow last year.

But what started as one sold-out gig, soon became two, and then three.

“Then before you know it, we’re back in the studio. Just like old times,” explains bass player Davy Brook.

Despite a few grey hairs, growing families and “grown up jobs”, Davy claims not much has changed since the boys first hung up their instruments 20 years ago.

“If anything, we’ve only got better,” he says. “We had 20 years to practice.

“The real difference is that 20 years ago, we were sharing our music by taking our cassettes around local pubs.

“Now thanks to Spotify and iTunes our music is played all over the world. We’ve got radio stations in Japan, the USA and Germany playing our single Lovely Things. It’s crazy to think how much music has changed.”

The old cassettes, however, have still proved useful.

“When we started practicing for our first gig back I had to go on to eBay and buy a cassette player,” said Davy.

“We had to listen to all the tracks again to remember the songs.” Davy explains, despite the changes in technology, the tunes still sound as fresh as ever.

He said: “We’re not a nostalgia band.

“Sure, there are some songs we play that our friends know and remember but these are still great guitar songs.”

Since their comeback show at The Bungalow last year, the reformed band have gone from strength to strength and are back in the studio putting the final touches to their album, as well as writing some new tracks.

The band, who describe their sound as “the happy Smiths with bright melodic tunes” have spent the summer gracing some of Scotland’s biggest stages with sold-out gigs at King Tuts and the 02 ABC.

Davy said: “Age isn’t really a big deal to us, it’s all about the music.

“We know people in their 20s, 30s, 40s who all make good original music – just look at Gerry Cinnamon. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you just need to play great tunes and generate some energy.

“When we were younger we were probably more interested in getting noticed but now all we care about is putting on a good show.

“As long as we can play some music, enjoy a few pints and no one throws a drink at us, I reckon we are doing all right.

“It feels really exiting again. We’re glad we’ve come back.”

The Muldoons will play at the Town Hall on September 29 as part of the Indie All Day Festival. For more information, go to www. facebook.com/themuldoons/
