-

A brilliant film show that will let people relive the old days of holidays by the seaside opens this weekend in Renfrew Town Hall.

Dubbed‘Doon the Watter’, its recalls how sailing away to the Clyde Coast has been a popular pursuit ever since Henry Bell launched Europe’s first commercially successful paddle steamer service in 1812.

The film event has been organised by Richard Weeks, who looks after Renfrewshire Council’s movie archive and helps people transfer their old cine films onto DVD or computer.

As revealed in the Paisley Daily Express, the Camcorder Club recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and even engaged top professional film maker Kevin Cameron to help club members make a memorable film made up of their own movie footage.

It’s been dubbed Sitting Room Cinema and will be shown at Paisley Arts Centre in the middle of next month.

Richard Weeks said going ‘doon the watter’probably reached the height of its popularity in the 1950s and 1960s.

He added:“In the 1960s many people bought cine cameras and of course what do you film but your holidays?

“This has led to an incredible archive of holidays filmed by local people going Doon the Watter to Rothesay, Dunoon and Arran.

“The film show is sure to provoke many fond memories and remind many people of the happy summers before the advent of package holidays.

“We also have rare footage of lots of the steamers which took people Doon the Watter.

“There will also be opportunities to reminisce and chat, so make sure to bring your memories to Renfrew Town Hall on Saturday, September 1, at 2pm”

This is is a film show not to be missed, and admission at the door is £2.
