Laura is pinning her hopes on other jewellers joining her

- Alison Rennie

A talented jeweller is hoping to dazzle fellow Renfrewshire designers so they join her in a new creative space.

Laura Provan, 39, set up Paisley Pins more than two years ago with fellow jeweller Andrea McCarthy.

She worked for years out of a cupboard at her Paisley home while looking after her three children, now aged seven, nine and 11.

Earlier this year, Andrea left the business to do her own thing and Laura decided it was time to expand and move into a space of her own.

And when she spotted the annexe of the old fire station on Gordon Street was up for rent, that’s what she did.

She explained: “I thought it was time to take the next step.

“There were too many d i s t ractions at home, especially with the children.

“I was trying to find somewhere suitable to work from so that I could move out of my cupboard at home, but the only thing available was office space.

“I was driving past the old fire station annexe one day and saw the sign saying there was space to rent.

“When I saw it, I thought it was ideal. It’s a brilliant space, there so much light inside, it’s lovely.

“I have taken on the lease for the small annexe building but it’s too big for just me.

“So, I’m looking for other creative industries, mainly jewellers, to sub- let some space to.

“I’ve got one other jeweller in here at the moment, Lisa Crockard Jewellery, and I’m hoping to get some more.

“There’s easily space for six jewellers, as well as some other er creatives.”

Paisley Pins has a range ge of brooches, earrings and d necklaces in funky colours, s, as well as sterling silver and d coloured aluminium studs, , all using the iconic Paisley y Pattern in modern and d interesting ways.

Laura is hosting an open studio event this weekend, September 8 and 9.

People can go along and look at the space to see if it could work for them and Laura will also have worksheets there for children to draw their own Paisley Pattern.

The studio will be open from 11am till 5pm on both days. All are welcome.
