A boozed-up reveller sparked mayhem with cops in Paisley after getting into an argument with another drinker, a court was told.

Ross Greig, 32, ended up shouting abuse and brawling with officers after he lost the plot on a night out in the town.

Jobless Greig had been waiting on his girlfriend at the JD Wetherspoons pub at County Square when he came to the attention of police patrolling the town centre.

Fiscal depute John Penman said: “The early hours on the day in question police officers were visiting the locus.

“On arrival officers observed the accused, Ross Greig, shouting at members of the public. He was acting in an aggressive manner.

“Officers got out of their vehicle and approached him because he had drawn their attention, and he continued to behave in the same manner.”

The fiscal added Greig was shouting ‘ f*** off ’ repeatedly at cops when they approached him and he began to “struggle violently” when they attempted to arrest him.

Five police officers attended the disturbance on May 27 were Greig was cuffed, placed in a cell van and taken to Govan Police Station.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause a fear and alarm, in that he shouted, swore and acted aggressively outside the Wetherspoons pub.

He also admitted resisting arrest, obstructing police officers, and struggling violently with them during the execution of their duty at the same place.

Defence agent Nadine Dormer told the court her client was ashamed at his behaviour and offered his apologies to the police officers involved.

She said: “My client had been waiting outside the venue.

“Another party had been ejected from the venue.

“A verbal exchange between them arose over whom had been asked to leave the club.

“Due to alcohol consumed an argument developed. And my client would like to apologise to the police officers involved.

“He was being verbally abusive to the other party when that abuse became directed at police because of his state of inebriation.

“He was placed under arrest. Up to five officers were involved in taking him to the ground which resulted in him injuring his head.”

She added Greig, of Strathmore Gardens, Rutherglen, spent three days in custody on the bank holiday weekend.

Sheriff Tom McCartney took a dim view of the rammy and handed Greig 80 hours unpaid work, reduced from 100 hours because of his guilty plea, to be completed with three months.

He added if the accused breached the order he would be brought straight back to court.
