White Ribbon honour for Gavin

Renfrewshi­re politician Gavin Newlands has been appointed to a leadership role to help encourage other men to play their part in ending violence against women and girls.

T h e Pa i s l e y and Renfrewshi­re North MP has been revealed as an Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland, the campaign to involve men in tackling violence against women.

Mr Newlands said: “Using my position as an MP to end gender-based violence is a mission and cause that I take very seriously.

“Shockingly, two women are killed each week at the hands of a partner or expartner and the # MeToo movement has highlighte­d that many women are abused in in their everyday lives.

“I am proud to have been appointed as an Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland.

“I will be working closely with White Ribbon campaign to raise awareness of the scale and the horrors of violence against women.

“In doing so, I will be urging men to sign the White Ribbon pledge to help create a better society where women and girls feel safe.”

D av y Thompson, campaign director for White Ribbon Scotland, said: “I am delighted that Gavin has agreed to become an Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland.

“He already does a lot of work to encourage other men to become involved in the campaign to end violence against women, and this new position will help him reach more men throughout Scotland.

“Our Ambassador­s play an important role in our communitie­s to challenge sex ist attitudes and behaviours, helping to create a society that that we all want to see.”
