Too little, too late for Saints We shot ourselves in the foot again and again, says Flynn

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren midfielder Ryan Flynn claimed the Saints gave themselves“no chance” following a horror showing at Hearts.

Flynn, introduced as a secondhalf substitute, cut a solemn but frustrated figure in the Tynecastle media room post-match following his side’s fourth defeat on the spin.

The damage was already done by the time the former Falkirk midfielder was brought on, with Steven Naismith’s first-half hat-trick the difference as the rampant hosts raced into a 4-1 lead.

However, Flynn conceded Saints were to blame for their hosts’ dominant showing as they shot themselves in the foot time and time again.

He said: “I’d agree that it is not clicking for us at the moment.

“I think that shows when you consider what has taken place in the last couple of games. I’d love to put my finger on why.

“If you come here and let the fans get going, then it makes it difficult for ourselves.

“As the game went on, you could see we could definitely get at them, but if you concede four goals, then you have got no chance of winning.

“When your backs are against the wall, you have just got to ride it out.

“It is not about creating chances at that point, it is just about keeping your shape and trying to make it into half time and regroup.

“Obviously, that didn’t happen. We put in a better performance in the second half, but it was done and dusted by then.”

Saints boss Alan Stubbs again fielded a young side, while the bench was made up of four players under the age of 21.

Flynn, an exper i e n c e d campaigner, admits that a lack of know-how among the ranks is cause for concern, however, with the transfer window now closed, he knows there is nothing the team can do about it.

He said: “The inexperience is a factor.

“When you come to these places, you have got to know what to expect.

“Maybe the first half was a bit of that, where not enough people knew what it takes to come here and put in a good performance from start to finish.

“What can we do? These young boys are going to gain experience from this.

“We have got this international break and we have got to work hard and make sure we are ready for the next game.

“It is going to be difficult, but there is not a lot you can do about it.”

Meanwhile, Flynn revealed he has been frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities having found himself on the bench in recent weeks.

He added: “’ I’ve not played as much football as I want to play, but I have just got to make sure I’m there and available for the team.”
