Forgiving volunteers not angry over wrecking spree
Caring community garden volunteers have appealed for understanding after young children trashed the site.
Ornaments and pots were smashed and left strewn along the path at Erskine Community Garden by three kids, aged between just eight and ten, on Thursday night.
It’s understood the trio were spotted on a wrecking spree and information has been sent to local schools and the police.
Although extensive damage was caused at the popular Darroch Park site, the team behind the garden have called for calm.
A spokesperson from the group said: “First of all please don’t get angry. We’re not.
“We are very sorry that three primary school age children seem to genuinely have some issues that need addressed.
“We’ll be emailing all primary schools with description of the three children aged between eight and ten who were observed doing this, as we feel they might need some kind of intervention from specialist services.
“We’ve also sent details to police.”
The community garden, which is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, has been open for two years offering a peaceful space for locals to enjoy.
Although that peace was broken, thoughtful organisers say the kids behind the vandalism need help rather than vilification.
They added: “We ordinarily wouldn’t draw attention to such damage as we don’t believe rewarding negative behaviour with publicity.
“However we can’t help but think this has been done by those in need of help.
“We’d just ask in general, if you have worries or concerns about young people, let the authorities know.
“Let’s not be angry. Let’s send our best wishes and hope the young people involved get the help they deserve.”
The damaged items have been cleared away.
Police say they are aware of the incident and will work with volunteers to identify those responsible for the damage.
