Expansion plans on hold after vandals trash club
Vandals wrecked a bowling clubhouse in Paisley.
During the vicious attack, the raiders even carried a piano outside and threw it on the green, we reported in September 1977.
And now Inkerman Bowling Club feared they would have to shelve expansion plans to pay for the damage.
Early estimates put the repair bill at £2,000, and a “substantial part” of that figure would have had to come from club funds.
The carnage that greeted members when they arrived at the club in Blackstoun Road included flooded premises, two fruit machines smashed, a bowling rink destroyed, two drums used by the band ruined and photographs ripped from the walls.
Inkerman secretary Vic Young, aged 65, confirmed the six-rink club was not fully insured against the break-in.
He said: “Officials will be meeting to discuss the situation, but no date has yet been fixed.
“We are not insured for some of the items against breaking and ent r y, including the £1,000 fruit machine.
“I put the damage at close- on £ 2,000, and a substantial amount of that is not insured.
“We have the funds, but it would mean a delay to our expansion plans.
“I don’t know what will happen now.”
Development proposals included a clubhouse extension, a more modern bar and increased toilet facilities.
Ink e rman, which had recently won the Renfrewshire County Cup for the second year in succession, had 170 members.
