Samson: Not good enough

Goalkeeper slams team’s display after 3-0 defeat

A gutted Craig Samson offered no excuses for an inept St Mirren display after they were crushed on the road at Hamilton.

Saints failed to get going against their fellow strugglers on an afternoon that brought them crashing back down to earth following last week’s improved showing against Celtic.

The experienced goalkeeper conceded that the side were never at the races over the course of a horrid 90 minutes.

He said: “It was a disappointing performance all round.

“We started well and had a couple of chances in the first part of the match but after that we were second best everywhere on the pitch. Hamilton deserved their victory.

“We didn’t look like we were going to score the next goal. The manager stressed at half-time that if we scored the next goal we could get ourselves back into the game.

“I don’t think we did enough to cause them any problems at the back. They certainly were the better team on the pitch.

“They caught us on the break with the first goal. The ball fell to Fredrik Brustad and then they got the penalty quite quickly.

“It put our heads down and it was difficult to get back into the game from there.

“We had to regroup but the game was flat from ourselves and we didn’t do well enough.

“It’s up to us to get back together and work hard in training to get a result this weekend.”

Samson insists that the side need to forget all about the plaudits that came their way following the recent point picked up with Celtic.

With a tricky run of fixtures on the horizon, starting on Saturday at home to Hibs, the 34-year-old says there is no time to wallow in self-pity.

He added:“It’s easy to get yourselves up for drawing with Celtic and having a good performance with the bounce of a new manager.

“But it’s about being able to come to places like this and having the guts to go and win the game. We didn’t do that. It was a good performance last week and we got what we deserved out of the game.

“This week was the same – we got what we deserved. Nothing. We didn’t play well enough.”
