Kelburne fail to take their chances

- Hockey ESM.......................3 Kelburne................1

Kelburne Ladies took centre stage in Division Two this week as they travelled to Edinburgh to face ESM.

The young Kelburne side gave a good account of themselves against challenging opposition, starting on the front foot and fighting until the end.

The Paisley side put their hosts under pressure early on as they won a number of short corners that they couldn’t capitalise on.

At the other end, the home side were relying on catching their opponents out on the break.

And that is exactly what they did as they converted a short corner of their own to put them 1-0 up at half-time.

Having found themselves behind, against the run of play, Kelburne simply continued in the same vein in the second half.

They eventually levelled things up after a deflected effort from Lucy Bliss went over the goalkeeper and into the top left hand corner of the goal.

Kelburne continued to dominate the game however they were unable to convert their superior possession into a goal.

They started to tire as the half wore on and the depleted bench began to tell on the team.

ESM pounced as they attacked down the left flank before crossing into the crowded circle. Young Kelburne keeper Emily Irving, who had pulled off a number of good saves throughout the game, was unlucky to see the ball trickle over the line on this occasion.

Kelburne reacted well and continued to push for an equaliser. Having been denied a number of short corners, the young side found themselves down to 10 players when two wayward tackles resulted in injuries to both Cara Bruce and Jessie Cuthbertson.

Again ESM capitalised as they broke up the field to win another short corner. ESM slipped the ball wide but the strike was blocked by Jenna Brolly for another penalty corner, which the hosts converted to put the result beyond doubt.
