Jeanette and Sharon brave the shave in the war on cancer

Duo lose their locks for charity

Two council workers have boldly - or baldly - decided to Brave the Shave and have their nappers clippered to raise charity cash.

Friends Jeanette Love and Sharon Waterson, who are both youth officers, came up with the plan after a number of their close friends and family members started treatment for cancer.

They paired up yesterday to wave goodbye to their barnets at the atrium inside Renfrewshire Council’s Paisley headquarters.

Both had long hair and were understandably a bit nervous about getting rid of it all.

Due to their current positions, Jeanette and Sharon often deal with youth disorder and speak to young people on a daily basis about how their behaviour impacts the community.

“It would be fair to say that we will receive a fair bit of stick from the youths that we deal with on a regular basis,” joked Sharon.

Jeanette added: “I was looking to do something for Macmillan for some time as I lost my sister Liz to cancer.

“My friend is currently going through treatment for cancer and is scared of losing her hair, so it is the least I can do to show my support at this time.”

Asked how both they and their families feel about going bald for the first time, Sharon was quick to point out that her partner’s reaction wasn’t particularly subtle as he told her: “You are aff yer heid getting it done”.

Jeanette is taking it all in her stride, saying: “At the end of the day it’s only hair, it will grow back.

“It is all good, as long as we can do something to help.”

After seeing the results of the shave, Sharon - who said “cheerio” to her brown locks - said: “I can’t believe what we’ve done but it was all well worth it!”

And former blonde Jeanette added: “It was an amazing turnout and thanks to everybody who came along.

“If only you could shave cancer away as well.”

The pair didn’t brave it alone yesterday.

They were joined by community safety hub colleague Danny Rossiter, who parted with his moustache of 30 years, and Eric Gilday, who had his legs waxed.

 Jeanette and Sharon have registered an official Brave the Shave donation page and donations can be made online at https://bravetheshave.macmillan. org.uk/shavers/sharon-waterson
