He’s a fox in the box

Oran hails goal ace Simeon

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren boss Oran Kearney believes hot- shot Simeon Jackson is the man to fire his Buddies up the table.

The former Blackburn and Norwich striker has caught the Northern Irishman’s eye during a trial spell this week having netted a hat-trick in a bounce game with Dundee on Tuesday afternoon.

The 31-year-old is expected to finalise a deal with the Saints today ahead of going straight into Saturday’s squad for the clash with Hibs.

The Canadian international – who has been capped 49 times – has been without a club since departing Walsall at the end of last season

And Kearney admitted his arrival comes as a reward for weeks of casting an eye over videos of available strikers from all over the world.

He said: “Simeon’s pedigree and goalscoring exploits go before him.

“He has kept himself in unbelievable shape and we are imminent with that one.

“I would be hopeful that we will get that deal over the line.

“We are still scouring the free agent market and I have watched hundreds of DVDs of players that have been sent to me from all over the world.

“Simeon will bring goals to the team and he is a ‘fox in the box’.

“Anton Ferdinand was brought in to shore up our defence but Simeon is arriving to score goals as they win games.

“I think he has ‘fox in the box’ tendencies and he played a trial match for us and scored three different types of goals which was great to see.

“You have to credit him because he really is in super shape and he would come into contention for the Hibs game.

“I went into this with an open mind and generally there are reasons why these types of players are available but what you are looking for is that little jewel who still has something to offer.

“I spoke to quite a few people about Simeon as a person and when you get to meet him he comes across really well and he is a very good pro.

“He will be brilliant in terms of his presence in the changing room and among the younger players.

“He will add something to the club.”

St Mirren also look set to run te rule over former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Lewis McGugan next week.

Meanwhile, the Buddies boss admitted that he is unlikely to make a move for former Fiorentina striker Cedric Condo.
