Danger driver raced by police speed trap

Motorist shot past cops then slammed on the brakes

- Chris Taylor

A motorist has been banned from the road after he tore past a police speed trap at 75mph.

Muhammad Shahid, 23, bombed past waiting cops at almost double the 40mph limit.

He slammed on the brakes after spotting officers – causing smoke to billow from under the car.

At Paisley Sheriff Court Shahid admitted dangerous driving.

Prosecutor Carol Cameron told how he was nabbed behind the wheel of a top-of-the-range Audi RS5.

She said: “Police were conducting speed checks.

“They heard loud revving noises from a vehicle travelling on the westbound carriageway at the top of the road near Braehead roundabout.

“Officers formed the view it was travelling well in excess of the speed limit.

“Police identified the speed of the vehicle as 75mph.

“The driver appeared to see police and applied the brakes harshly, to the extent both officers could see smoke coming from the front tyres and front nose.

“They could smell a strong scent of burning.”

Shahid was driving a pal’s sports car – worth more than £60,000.

He had no insurance policy in place when he was stopped on January 12 near Renfrew’s Torridon Drive.

He claimed he had tried to take out cover for the car online.

Ms Cameron told how he screeched to a halt just yards from the footpath.

She added: “The driver stopped and police moved in front of the vehicle.

“There were several pedestrians and dog walkers on the pavement.

“There was a passenger in the vehicle.

“The driver was asked to join police on the kerb.

“On approaching police, he said, ‘I know, I know’.

“He told police he wasn’t aware of the speed limit and asked: ‘Is it 50mph?”

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew disqualified Shahid from driving for 12 months.

He said: “It’s the case there was no traffic inconvenienced by your foolhardy behaviour.

“You did drive in a way which fell well below the standard to be expected.

“When you saw police, you jumped on the anchors.

“Thankfully, you were able to control the car.”

Shahid, of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, was fined £900.
