Simeon stays positive

- Craig Ritchie

Simeon Jackson insists shot-shy St Mirren are on the right track despite spurning a glorious chance of his own.

The Canadian, making his debut for the club against Hibs on Saturday, saw his second-half effort saved by Adam Bogdan as the Buddies chased an equaliser following David Gray’s header.

The former Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers man admitted that he should have done better having raced clear of Efe Ambrose, but he didn’t let it dampen an otherwise impressive debut.

Jackson said: “I thought that I should have scored.

“I think I came on to it too straight. I should have opened up a bit more and guided it in but it wasn’t to be.

“I thought we had some other decent chances and we really should have gotten something from the game.

“It is all about scoring goals so we just need to keep trying to get ourselves in those positions and it will come.

“Everyone is trying to score goals. Goals win games and you know that as a striker.

“When it isn’t going your way you just need to keep getting yourself in the right positions and it will fall for you.

“But it felt really good. It was unfortunate about the result but I thought the lads played very well.

“We should have got something from the game.”

The 31-year-old has only been in at the Saints for a week but he revealed that he is fully aware of the task at hand as the side battle to get themselves back on track following a difficult start.

And having watched from afar as the Buddies drew with Celtic a fortnight ago, Jackson reckons the Paisley side just need to replicate that type of display.

Jackson added: “It has been really good.

“The gaffer was saying we need to get back to the Celtic performance. I saw the highlights from that game and I’d agree.

“But I thought we did that and I have seen already that the fans will really get on your side if you play well.

“If we play like we did against Hibs then I think we will win more games.”
