Ladies get off to a great start at first tournament
Bishopton squad are undefeated at Whitecraigs event
Bishopton Ladies rugby team are celebrating success in their first ever tournament.
The touch rugby side went undefeated at Whitecraigs Rugby Club fending off strong competition from four opponents.
Enthusiastic players ranging in age from 13 to 54 took to the field for Bishy and loved every minute of it.
Head coach Steven McLoughlin says the team puts fun first but is focused on learning the skills of the game.
He said: “We started with around 10 ladies coming when it was more of a rugby fitness camp. Now we have 20 ladies coming and we focus more on the game.
“The tournament was about giving the women a chance to experience what it is like to play in real games. We had around 60 women from different teams down at Whitecraigs for the competition, and many were first timers.
“We did really well on the night and went undefeated, winning three matches and drawing one. All the players did really well.Some have actually come to me since and said they would consider playing full- contact now.
“These were ladies who categorically said they wouldn’t play the full-contact version of the game and now they are looking at it.
“I think it is really important that the women are now seeing the development and progression from the work they have been putting in over the last few months.
“To get to the stage where they are taking part in a competition gives them a lot of confidence.”
For Steven, the sport is all about having fun and being active and encouraging others to take part.
“For me as a coach the first thing is to make it fun. It’s about learning the skills but in a fun and enjoyable way.
“Our team is made up of players from age 13 up to 54. Anyone can come along and take part. My door is always open,” he added.
“If you want to come down just to watch training to see if it might be for you, that is fine.”
