My ex shoved me to ground after I dumped him, woman tells trial Man denies making threats at house

- Chris Taylor

An ex-lag attacked a mum because she dumped him when he was banged up, a court heard.

Roberto McElwee, 29, is charged with pouncing on Sarah Connelly, 27, after she dropped his belongings at a pal’s.

It is claimed he launched a foulmouthed rant before shoving her to the floor.

McElwee denies acting in a threatening or abusive manner at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Sarah told how she took a bus to the flat but did not expect her ex to be there.

She said: “I dropped the kids off at school and I made arrangements to drop off belongings. Me and Roberto had split up when he was in jail.

“I went in and I think they two had been drinking.

“They were staggering about – it was 10 o’clock-ish.

“We had an argument, I can’t remember what it was about.

“At first, it was a discussion, then it got more heated.

“He started shouting. “While he was shouting, he pushed me to the ground. “I was scared.” Sarah told how she visited the flat in Paisley’s Broomlands Street after contact with her ex’s pal.

Scott Sommerville had allowed her to drop off McElwee’s belongings at his flat.

The woman claims she was only in “20 to 25 minutes” before he turned on her.

She insists she fled the building and called the police on February 16.

Prosecutors allege he threatened her and repeatedly shoved her during the row.

Defence lawyer Nadine Dormer claimed Sarah had started shouting at her client.

The solicitor insisted the woman could have left the flat but had decided to carry on the argument.

She then revealed Sarah had never told cops she had been pushed to the floor.

Ms Dormer took her through the statement she gave to officers – but it made no mention of being jostled to the ground.

Sarah maintained she told them she had been “pushed on the face”.

The trial, before Sheriff Tom McCartney, continues.
