John re-elected to community group

-

Ferguslie Community Council has confirmed its office bearers as it enters its second year in existence writes Jack Thomson, Local Democracy Reporter.

John McIntyre has been re- elected as chairman, while Terry McTernan will continue as secretary.

Meanwhile, Karen Campbell, who resigned as treasurer due to work commitments, will be replaced by Chris Tulloch.

Mr McIntyre reflected on a positive inaugural year, which has involved the establishment of community clean-up group Pals of the Privies and sub- group Ferguslie Arts Festival and Social History Group.

He said: “The community council has put Ferguslie back on the map again, both locally and in the wider Renfrewshire area.

“We are quite happy at the way elected politicians are looking at Ferguslie again.

“We’re being appreciated by our wider community for the job we’ve done in the last year. They have felt we are doing a good job and they want us to continue.

“It’s all really positive stuff. It’s bringing back community members volunteering in their own community.”

Renfrewshire Council housing bosses have put forward proposals for the construction of 100 new homes in the Tannahill area, which Mr McIntyre is confident wouldn’t have happened without the group.

He said: “I really don’t believe that would have happened on that scale without the community council.”

The community council is also appealing for new members to take their tally from 11 and get more people involved in the area’s regeneration.

Mr McIntyre added: “Much of the community has been saying things that they are looking for are more activities for kids, teenagers and the elderly. To make this happen we need volunteers to come on board.”
