Cops nabbed lout wearing garish gear

A would-be thief has been caged after he was spotted fleeing a botched raid wearing luminous gloves.

John Duff, 31, had on the bright green mitts when he targeted a village post office.

He was found cowering in a garden – still clutching them – when cops nabbed him.

Duff was jailed for 27 months after he admitted attempting to smash into the building during a hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Pamela Brady told how witnesses spotted him with the gloves.

She said: “Two ladies working as cleaners at McGill’s bus garage became aware of two males who were directly outside the post office.

“They were suspiciously.

“One wearing a dark hooded top was walking back and forth – he was agitated. He seemed to be watching vehicles pass by.

“The ladies saw another male, also with a dark hooded top, standing at the front entrance.

“He appeared to have a crowbar in his hand.

“The witnesses could hear acting the sound of wood cracking and banging sounds. “Police were contacted. “They attended in a police van and soon saw the two males running away.

“Both were dressed in dark clothing.”

Duff and his accomplice targeted the post office in Greenock Road, Inchinnan, on June 13.

They tried to force their way in around 3am – but ran off after being disturbed.

Witnesses told how they crept back to the building and tried to get in again.

Police rushed to the scene and chased the crooks on foot.

Sheriff Seith Ireland said: “It’s a post office, which is a matter of significance for the local community.

“It is a place where things of some value are likely to be found.

“You have a very unenviable record.

“I form the view you remain a serious risk of offending.

“For these reasons, and for the protection of the public, I’m going to make you the subject of a supervised release order.”

Duff will be monitored by social workers for a year after he is released from prison.
