Gritters at the ready for big freeze
Council chiefs have set aside 4,000 tonnes of salt as they prepare for winter in Renfrewshire, writes Jack Thomson, Local Democracy Reporter
Bosses have been working to make sure the local authority is ready for whatever conditions are thrown their way by the elements this year.
The council will also have nine gritters operating within Renfrewshire throughout the winter period, while tractors will be used as and when required.
A spokesman for the local authority said: “We have been working for the last few months to ensure we are prepared for winter weather, including the provision of 4000 tonnes of salt currently being available for our gritters to use.
“Our winter teams work on a 24/7 schedule throughout the winter to ensure services continue to operate and our roads and footpaths are safe and accessible.
“Our annual #RenReady campaign also provides support and guidance to our local communities on how to stay safe and be prepared for any eventuality that severe weather can bring.”
There are also 540 grit bins in Renfrewshire, which typically hold half a tonne of salt.
Meanwhile, a competition is being held to name council gritters, which has been popular among residents.
A council spokesman added: “We’re currently holding a competition to # NameOurGritters, which aims to highlight the local heroes who keep Renfrewshire moving including out gritter drivers, Care at Home team and Community Meals service.
“The competition is designed to bring the #RenReady message to the forefront of people’s minds and encourage them to prepare their family, their community or their business for any severe weather.”
