Ewan’s miracle escape from M8 crash

-

passenger seat and pal Robert Scott, 35, was driving when they were flung forward during the M8 accident on Monday morning.

He said: “I think I was looking down at my phone and the next thing I knew the truck hit us from behind.

“Robert saw it coming in the mirror, but there was nothing we could do to stop it.

“My head was thrown forward through the window.

“The van spun out and smashed into another car. “My head was bleeding. “Nurses had to tease the glass out of my head with tweezers.

“It could have been much worse. We’re very lucky.”

Ewan and Robert had set off during work for Paisley’s Mirren Property Services, in Abercorn Street.

They were caught up in the crash while they were heading to a job in Helensburgh.

Their van was loaded with tools and gear, which was left scattered across the carriageway near Paisley.

Motorists watched in horror as the HGV careered into the back of the van around 10.20am.

An ambulance rushed Ewan and Robert to Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Both men were left with whiplash and cuts and bruises.

Ewan added: “It happened so quickly.

“Some off-duty Navy guys were in a car next to us and they ran over and began stopping traffic.

“There was a paramedic in a rapid response car a bit behind us.

“They ran over to make sure we were okay.

“Thankfully, the lorry driver and the guy in the car we hit were able to get out.

“There had been an accident further up the road.

“It was causing long tailbacks.

“The sun was hanging pretty low and the guy just might not have seen us until it was too late.”

The accident caused chaos on the motorway with long delays.

Ewan, of Renfrew, has been signed off work while he recovers from the scare.

Police Scotland officers darted to the scene minutes after the collision.

A spokesman said: “Police were called to a road crash involving a heavy goods vehicle, a car and a van at junction 29 of the M8.

“Emergency services responded and two men were taken to hospital, where they are believed to have been treated for minor injuries.”
