Devils take the points in Clan’s close encounter

-

The Clan were edged out 1-0 by reigning league champions the Cardiff Devils on a frustrating night for the hosts.

Pete Russell’s men started on the front foot and early strikes from Vaclav Stupka and Zack Fitzgerald required vital saves from Great Britain and Cardiff goalie Ben Bowns to ensure that his side never fell behind following some pressure from their hosts.

The Devils had opportunities of their own and were unlucky to spurn a number following some lax defence. However, Clan were able to break at speed and Craig Peacock was denied by another Bowns save.

The second period started with Devils looking to get themselves off of the mark. Andrew Lord’s side went close when a snapshot from Layne Ulmer forced Clan goalkeeper Joel Rumpel into a fine reaction save.

But it acted as a simple stay of execution as Stephen Dixon then forced the puck over the line after Charles Linglet’s pass caused problems between the Clan’s back line.

Clan came back fighting at the end of the period and almost hit back through Travis Ehrhardt after he was played in by Gerard Hanson, but the chance was wasted as he struck wide.

Josh Gratton was next to try his luck but saw his strike deflected over the bar thanks to another good save.

And despite Clan’s best efforts, it was the visitors that held on to move to within two points of the three teams at the top of the table.
