It’s your chance to be a movie star

Extras wanted to fill community centre

- Kenneth Speirs

A final push is on to wrap up a major film that is being made about legendary Paisley politician William Gallacher.

This is a chance for ordinary people from the town to take part in the feature as extras.

Filmmaker Alex Cathcart said: “We are trying to recreate a meet that was held in Christmas Day in 1915, at which Lloyd George was actually heckled off the stage to chants of ‘We want Gallacher’.

“He never got to say more than a dozen words.

“He had come up here to put the folk of the West of Scotland back in their kennels.

“He completely failed. His concern was that the recent victorious rent strikes, led by Kilbarchan-born Mary Barbour, with industrial support from Gallacher and co, when allied to unrest in the Scottish munitions factories, might lead to some sort of revolution.

“He also found that Gallacher could not be bought with the usual blandishments or offers.”

Alex said he hopes to fill the Beechwood Community Centre at 5.45pm on Tuesday, November 13, to where potential extras are invited to go.

“Filming will last around one and a quarter hours,” Alex said.

“Be prepared to heckle at the top of your voice.

“No dress requirements, but nothing too modern, please.”

William Gallacher was born in Paisley, in 1881, and rose to become Britain’s first Communist MP.

He died in 1965, and his funeral was one of the biggest Paisley has ever seem.

Much of the shooting of the movie about his life has already taken place in locations all over Paisley, including at Paisley Abbey and the Bull Inn.

Renfrewshire Council Labour group leader Eddie Devine even “swapped parties” for the day and became a double for Winston Churchill when the abbey stood in for the House of Commons during filming.
