Futures are now on the line Midfielder Edwards knows changes are on the way

- Craig Ritchie

Midfielder Ryan Edwards admits every St Mirren player is fighting for their future between now and January.

The on- loan Hearts man has been a regular under new manager Oran Kearney since his arrival in September.

However, he insists he cannot afford to become complacent as Kearney sets his sights on bringing in his own players.

Edwards said: “I think you’re always playing for your future. I would imagine the manager is going to make some changes in January and bring in some new players.

“He has said that he feels the squad is too big and I’m sure he would like to bring in some more of his own players to work with.

“Everyone is playing for their careers and livelihoods because nobody ever wants to be in a team that’s relegated.

“We need a win to spark the dressing room and try to get that momentum and consistency.

“We were looking at this run of fixtures leading up to the next international break as a great chance of getting some points, but we haven’t been able to do that yet.

“When you look at the next run of games after the break, there are some massive games to get some points and push up the table.

“Once we get that first win, I feel there could be a rollover effect where confidence builds each week.”

Edwards, who suffered relegation with Partick Thistle last season before moving to Hearts, admits it has been tough being thrust into another relegation battle.

However, the 24- year- old reckons he can lean from the experience of last year’s dogfight to help Saints out of trouble.

He added: “You have to come and work as hard as possible. If you come in and are negative and start blaming others then it doesn’t help anyone.

“Everything the manager has done has been to create a good environment and it’s just about getting that first win.

“I feel it will turn soon – sooner rather than later – and I hope it’s Saturday. “We can’t dwell on things. “The way we structure things is that we come in on a Monday and analyse things and put them to bed .

“Training this week has been really good and it’s a matter of thinking one game at a time and how physically and mentally you can prepare for the next game.” (Adjacent to Kwik Save car park, Paisley Road West)
