Karin thanks hospice for caring for Kenny Cash donation in memory of husband

- Kenneth Speirs

A Johnstone woman raised thousands for Paisley’s Accord Hospice in memory of her husband.

Kenny Pointon died of cancer in May at the age of 54, and wife Karin wanted to thank the charity for all of its support over the two years of ill-health.

Mrs Pointon raised more than £5,000, of which 60 per cent will go to Accord and the rest to the Beatson Cancer Charity, which is connected to the famous Glasgow centre where many Renfrewshire people are treated.

She said: “Kenny went to day hospice at Accord. He never was an in-patient and he spent a lot of time at the Beatson.

“We had a fundraising night at the Prince of Wales Hall in Renfrew.

“We invited our good friend Tony Kay who is a Gary Barlow tribute act, and we got companies to donate raffle prizes and auction prizes.

“So, between the raffles, the auction and selling tickets to the event, that’s how we raised the money.”

Mrs Pointon was thrilled at the amount raised. “I was over the moon,” she said. “I was expecting maybe half of that. And there is still money coming in.”

The aim of the donation to Accord and the Beatson Cancer Charity is to help both of them sustain the huge help they give to families who have someone suffering from cancer.

“It will hopefully help other families going through their cancer journey,” Mrs Pointon said.

“I think, for myself especially, they didn’t just look after Kenny they looked after me as well.

“I thought it was important for me to give something back to charities that had supported me greatly over the past two years.

“I am so eternally grateful to both charities for providing support, for always being there at the end of the phone as well.

“I think it’s important to raise awareness of what’s available to people in the community.

“They shouldn’t be alone because I wasn’t aware of what both charities did until I had to access them.

“So, I think it’s important to raise awareness of both.”

David McFadden, senior fundraiser at Accord, said the fundraising is a fitting tribute.

He said: “We are so grateful for this brilliant event in Kenny’s memory.

“It was a wonderful tribute to his life and the funds raised will go towards the hospice supporting others who need all the love, help and palliative care support that we provide in the community.”

Cancer Charity’s challenges and community fundraiser, added: “We would like to thank Kenny’s family and friends for their generosity.

“What a wonderful evening to celebrate Kenny’s life.

“These funds will go towards providing wellbeing and patient care services, as well as funding specialists, research and education to invest in a better future for cancer patients and their families.”
