Russell blasts Clan performance

- Ice Hockey

Clan head coach Pete Russell blasted his side after they fell to a disappointing 6-1 defeat at the hands of Milton Keynes Lightning.

The Braehead side were no match for Russell’s former outfit as they were outclassed from start to finish.

The head coach apologised profusely to all those who made the trip south of the border following a highly frustrating match-up.

Russell said: “It was simply not acceptable for us in so many ways. This season we have been a disciplined group but we lost our self control. It hurt us massively.

“We were so far away from the level we have been competing at and got what we deserved.

“Milton Keynes got everything they deserved. They fully deserved their win.

“I personally apologise for our performance and our poor discipline.

“We will learn from this setback and get back on it on tonight against Sheffield and then tomorrow against Milton Keynes.”

Clan’s defeat handed Lightning their first win in almost a month.

Having lost their head coach earlier in the day, Lightning were determined to get off to a good start against a Clan side coming into the match off the back of two wins.

The hosts got just that as Robbie Baillargeon put the Lightning a goal up after only two minutes.

Three minutes later the Lightning doubled their lead through Tim Wallace.

The Clan got themselves on the board with a minute and eight seconds left of the opening period, but again fell two goals behind in the second period – Wallace striking again to make it 3-1.

And they were 4-1 down when Wallace completed his hat-trick with 32:09 gone with another power-play effort.

Wallace then earned himself an assist for Lightning’s fifth as Eric Neiley came in unmarked and a two-on-one breakaway allowed Georgs Golovkovs to score on a deflected shot with just over 10 minutes to go.
