Adam: The best is yet to come

Hammill lays it on the line

- Craig Ritchie

Adam Hammill insists St Mirren supporters have yet to see the best of him.

The Englishman has been beset by injury woes since arriving in Paisley last month but returned to the starting XI for the 1-1 stalemate with Dundee last weekend.

The 30-year-old was carried off just half an hour into his debut against Aberdeen last month, with Hammill finding himself restricted to a bit-part role despite initial fears he would be missing for up to two months.

However, the former Wolves and Barnsley man is adamant there is more to come from him – telling the fans that he hasn’t even been close to firing on all cylinders.

With a full week’s training under his belt thanks to the international break, Hammill reckons he will be back to his best by the time next Saturday’s clash against high-flying Hearts comes around.

He told Express Sport: “There is no way the fans have seen the best of me – there is a lot more to come.

“Looking back, initially after my first start where I got injured, the next two or three games that I played I was still carrying that injury.

“I wasn’t able to fully assert myself.

“Any sort of knock on it would have had an effect for the next 15 minutes of the game.

“I wanted to play but it is perhaps for the best that I was on the bench for a few games.

“It was important for the injury to heal.

“It wasn’t until last Monday where I felt really good in training. The gaffer noticed that himself.

“I could have contact and hold players off whereas in the previous few weeks I have not been able to do that.

“You will see the full version of me after this international break.”

Hammill’s return to the first team reaped the rewards as he set up Simeon Jackson to win the penalty that handed the Buddies the lead.

And with the clash against the Jambos on the horizon, he reckons that he can play a key role in gaining a valuable three points.

He added: “I am looking forward to getting this week of training under my belt.

“We will have a few more gym sessions to allow me to strengthen even more.

“I have spoken to the manager about it and I think last Saturday against Dundee was the first time I have played pain-free.

“I can properly sprint and get about the pitch more and do the work that I normally do.

“I am looking forward to kicking on next week.

“The game with Hearts will be a massive one but I am feeling good and hopefully we can build on the draw with Dundee.”
