“The witness continued to tell the accused to calm down but this seemed to irritate the accused further.

“She was trying to calm her down as she was worrying other patients in the department.

“The accused said, ‘What the f*** do you care?’

“She moved closer to the accused and said, ‘I do care’, at which point the accused kicked out with her leg and kicked the witness to the left side of her face, causing her glasses to be thrown across the hallway, and causing redness and swelling.”

She then spat in Mr Quinn’s eye, leaving him fearing he has contracted her hepatitis.

Miss Marshall added: “He has had to undergo testing to confirm whether or not he now suffers from hepatitis as a result of the spit landing in his eye.

“The results of that test are not known as yet.”

Defence solicitor Eamonn McGeehan said Woods would benefit from supervisio­n in the community upon her release from prison.

As he called for background reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing, to see if she should be supervised when she is released from custody, and adjourned the case until next month for that to be done Sheriff David Pender said: “Prison is inevitable.

“You have a substantia­l record, involving a number of conviction­s for violence, but these are obviously of a very serious nature.”
