A man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car in Paisley’s west end.

The 64-year-old was seriously injured as he crossed Gallow Green Road near to Maxwellton Street and Broomlands Street.

The man – who has not been named – was struck by a Vauxhall Mokka driven by a 50- year- old woman on the northbound carriage.

Ambulance crews raced to the scene to tend to the stricken man before rushing him to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

in Glasgow .

Medics treating his injuries describe his condition as critical.

The road was closed for around five hours around 6.25pm on Thursday as Police Scotland’s specialist collision investigat­ors scoured the roadway while the silver Mokka involved in the accident was removed on the back of tow truck.

A motorist who passed the scene shortly after described seeing the man’s shopping strewn across the road.

The man, who asked not to be named, told the Paisley Daily Express: “I knew it was bad when the guy’s shopping had been scattered across the road and the police had actually put a cordon round each bit with police tape.”

A police probe has been launched into the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the tragic incident and officers have appealed for any witnesses to come forward,

A Po l i c e Scotland Spokesman said: “Around 6.25pm on Thursday evening, the 64 year- old man was crossing the northbound carriagewa­y of Gallow Green Road near to its junctions with Maxwellton Street and Broomlands Street in Paisley, when he was struck by a Vauxhall Mokka being driven by a 50 year-old woman.

“Officers from the Road Policing Complex in Helen Street, Glasgow, are appealing for any witnesses to the crash, or to anyone who was driving on those roads around the time of the crash last night, who has dash camera footage to contact them as soon as possible.

“Road Policing Officers based at Helen Street can be contacted by calling 101.”
